You Are Loved
John 3:16 (NKJV)
“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”
- The Greatest Truth
The greatest truth a human being can ever discover is not that God is powerful, holy, wise, or eternal—though He is all these things. The greatest truth is that God loves you. Not merely humanity in general. Not merely the world collectively. You. Before you were born, before you had done anything good or evil, before you ever thought about God, His heart was already turned toward you. The cross is not simply proof that God exists; it is proof of what God is like.
- Love Revealed
Human beings often love those who love them. Friends love friends. Families love families. Nations honour their heroes. But God demonstrates a love that transcends every human category. “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8). Christ did not die for those who deserved Him. He died for those who rejected Him. He died for those who ignored Him. He died for those who were His enemies. The cross reveals a love unlike anything the world has ever known.
- Love Cannot Exist in Isolation
Love cannot exist in isolation. Love always moves outward. Love gives. Love shares. Love seeks relationship. Love desires union. This raises a profound question: If God is love, whom did God love before creation existed? The answer is found in the nature of God Himself. God did not create because He was lonely. God did not create because He lacked companionship. Before the world existed, the Father loved the Son, and the Son loved the Father, in the fellowship of the Holy Spirit. God is eternally relational. Love existed before creation because God Himself is eternal love. Creation is not God filling a void. Creation is the overflow of divine love. The universe exists because love desired to share itself.
- Love and Authority
Many people struggle with the idea that God is both loving and sovereign. Some imagine that if God is Master, He cannot be loving. Others imagine that if God is loving, He cannot command obedience. Both are mistakes. Love without authority becomes indulgence. Authority without love becomes tyranny. God is neither indulgent nor tyrannical. He is the perfect union of love and lordship. He is Father. He is King. He is Shepherd. He is Lord. His authority is not the opposite of His love; it is the expression of His love. A loving father guides. A loving shepherd leads. A loving king protects. God commands because He knows the path that leads to life. His lordship is not domination but benevolent rule. The God who commands us is the same God who died for us.
- The Voluntary Sacrifice
No one dies for another unless there is love. Forced sacrifice is not love. Compelled devotion is not love. Love requires freedom. This is why Jesus said: “No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself.” (John 10:18). The cross was not an accident. It was not a tragedy beyond God’s control. It was not the triumph of evil. It was the voluntary self-giving of God. Jesus was not forced to die. He chose to die. The Creator willingly entered His creation. The Judge willingly stood in the place of the guilty. The King willingly wore a crown of thorns. Infinite power willingly submitted to suffering. This is love beyond human comprehension.
- The Difference Between Power and Love
Throughout history people have feared power. Kings possess power. Armies possess power. Witchdoctors claim power. False gods promise power. But power alone is not proof of divinity. Power without goodness becomes oppression. Power without love becomes destruction. The question is not merely: “How powerful is this being?” The question is: “What does this being do with power?” Satan uses power to destroy. Human tyrants use power to dominate. False religions often use power to manipulate through fear. But God uses power to save. The highest display of divine power was not the creation of galaxies. It was the salvation of sinners. At Calvary, omnipotence revealed itself through self-sacrifice. The greatest act of power in history was not taking life. It was giving life.
- Salvation Is Love Accomplished
Love is not merely an emotion. Love acts. Love gives. Love sacrifices. Love redeems. God’s love did not remain a feeling in heaven. It entered history. It took flesh. It walked among us. It touched lepers. It forgave sinners. It raised the dead. It carried a cross. It shed blood. It conquered the grave. Salvation is love accomplished. The cross is not simply God saying, “I love you.” The cross is God proving it. Justice was satisfied. Sin was atoned for. Death was defeated. A way home was opened. Love accomplished what humanity never could.
- Worship Comes After Salvation
Human beings were created to worship. Yet true worship cannot be separated from salvation. A person may sing songs. A person may perform rituals. A person may recite prayers. But genuine worship begins when the heart encounters the saving love of God. We do not worship in order to earn salvation. We worship because salvation has been given. The order is important: Love. Grace. Salvation. Worship. God loved us. Therefore, Christ died for us. Through Christ we are saved. Because we are saved, we worship. True worship is love responding to Love.
- The Uniqueness of Christ
Every religion attempts to answer humanity’s deepest problem. Many offer moral improvement. Many offer enlightenment. Many offer rituals. Many offer laws. Many offer human effort. But Christianity proclaims something unique. God Himself came. God Himself suffered. God Himself died. God Himself rose again. The Gospel is not humanity reaching up to God. It is God reaching down to humanity. No one has ever loved like Jesus. No one has ever given like Jesus. No one has ever entered death and emerged victorious like Jesus. The resurrection is God’s declaration that love is stronger than death.
- True Love Seeks Union
The purpose of the Gospel is greater than forgiveness. It is greater than escaping hell. It is greater than receiving blessings. The ultimate purpose of salvation is union with God. The Father desires children. The Son desires a bride. The Spirit desires a dwelling place. God seeks relationship. Not forced compliance. Not religious performance. Not fearful slavery. Relationship. Communion. Fellowship. Adoption. Believers are not merely pardoned criminals. They are sons and daughters welcomed into the family of God. The God who rules the universe invites us to call Him: “Abba, Father.” This is the miracle of grace.
- You Are Loved
You are not an accident. You are not forgotten. You are not abandoned. You are not alone. Before you ever called upon God, He loved you. Before you ever searched for Him, He was pursuing you. Before you ever knew His name, He knew yours. The cross stands as an eternal declaration that your life matters to God. The nails proclaim His love. The empty tomb proclaims His victory. The Holy Spirit proclaims His presence. The Gospel proclaims His invitation.
You are loved by the God who created the stars. You are loved by the King who wore a crown of thorns. You are loved by the Saviour who conquered death. You are loved with an everlasting love. And because you are loved, you are invited—not into slavery, but into fellowship; not into fear, but into faith; not into isolation, but into union with the living God through Jesus Christ our Lord.
“We love Him because He first loved us.” (1 John 4:19)
Amen.
